Entry from: El Calafate, Argentina Entry Title: “El Calafate – Day 2″ Entry: “After breakfast we head for Parque Nacional los Glaciares and the Perito Moreno glacier. We take Rt. 15, a dirt road that offers better wildlife viewing and panoramic views of Lake Argentino than does the paved Rt. 11. Along the way we see the Black Breasted Buzzard Eagles, Andean Condors, and Caracara. We travel along the Brazo Rico arm of Lake Argentino to reach the Perito Moreno glacier. The glacier is 2 miles wide and 165 ft. high where it meets Lake Argentino and is one of only a few glaciers in the world that is growing in size. Viewing the glacier is very easy from the metal walkways that descend toward the glacier from the parking area. Every few minutes you will hear the loud crack of ice as a large piece of the glacier breaks off and falls into Lake Argentino. This is called calving. Along the walkways you pass through forests inhabited by many species of birds including the Austral Parakeet. After a long day at the glacier we arrive back at our hotel in time to talk another walk to Nimez Lagoon. This time of year the lagoon is flood due to the ice and snow melt and we are only able to walk along its perimeter.
